To the ancient Greeks, anything lyrikos was appropriate to the lyre. That elegant stringed instrument was highly regarded by the Greeks and was used to accompany intensely personal poetry that revealed the thoughts and feelings of the poet. When the adjective lyric, a descendant of lyrikos, was adopted into English in the mid-late 1500s, it too referred to things pertaining or adapted to the lyre. It initially described poets, emotionally expressive poetic forms (such as elegies, odes, or sonnets), or works meant to be sung. Two lexical developments came soon after: lyric gained noun use as a term for a lyric composition or poem, and lyrical was adopted as an alternate adjective form. Lyrical is now the more common adjective; it’s used broadly to describe writing or other creative works that have an artistically beautiful or expressive quality. Meanwhile, in modern use lyric is most familiar in its plural noun form—a song’s lyrics are its words. In other uses lyric is a technical term limited mostly to poetry (a lyric poet writes lyric poems, i.e., poems that express direct emotion) and opera (many opera companies use the word in their names, and a lyric soprano has a light voice and melodic style).

Impromptu most often describes things, such as speeches or gatherings, that are not prepared ahead of time but that instead happen spontaneously. An impromptu concert or photoshoot, for example, is conceived and executed in the moment. Impromptu was borrowed—spelling, meaning, and all—from French in the mid-18th century. The French had gotten the word from Latin, from the phrase in promptu, meaning “in readiness.” But the presence of prompt in there is no coincidence: both impromptu and prompt are ultimately derived from the Latin promere, meaning “to bring forth, take out.

When #English speakers first borrowed challah from Yiddish, they couldn’t quite settle on a single spelling, so the word showed up in several forms; challah and hallah, and the plural forms challot, challoth, challahs, hallot, halloth, and hallahs were all common enough to merit inclusion in Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged when it was released in 1961. Today, challah and the anglicized plural challahs are the variants that are usually encountered by English speakers. The initial ch of challah is frequently pronounced as a velar or uvular fricative, like the ch in the German Buch or the Scottish English loch.

Don’t worry if you struggle with the word rectify—we’re here to set you straight. When you rectify something, you correct an error or make things right, which is fitting because rectify and correct both ultimately trace back to the Latin word regere, which can mean “to lead straight,” “to direct,” or “to rule.” Rectify has had its “to set right” meaning since the early 16th century, but the word has over the years accrued various other meanings as well, including the specialized uses “to purify especially by repeated or fractional distillation” (as in “rectified alcohol”), “to make (an alternating current) unidirectional,” and several medical applications having to do with healing of one kind or another. Regere plays a part in the histories of a number of familiar English words, in addition to those mentioned above; the many relatives of rectify include direct, resurrection, and regimen.

Eleemosynary
A grammarian once asserted in reference to eleemosynary that “a long and learned word like this should only be used under the stress of great need.” Whether or not you agree with such prescriptions, the word eleemosynary isn’t exactly ubiquitous. Its tricky spelling doesn’t do it any favors—though this wasn’t always the case. The good people of early England had mercy on themselves when it came to spelling and shortened the root of eleemosynary, the Latin eleemosyna, to ælmes, which they used to mean “charity.” (You may be more familiar with alms, an ælmes derivative that refers to food, money, etc., given to the poor.) The original Latin root, however, was resurrected in the early 17th century to give us our modern conundrum of a spelling.

“Who” vs “whom”
Use who when the word is performing the action. Use whom when it is receiving the action.
If you want to use who and whom correctly, remember this rule: When you can replace the word with “he,” “she,” or “they,” then you will use who. When you can replace it with “him,” “her,” or “them,” then you should use whom. Examples: “I don’t know who your brother is! (He/she is your brother); “Several girls were playing soccer, one of whom scored a goal.”
What would it mean for your career to be able to speak and write more freely and confidently in English?

In ancient Rome, voting at legal assemblies was done by group, with the majority in a group determining the vote. The group chosen to vote first on an issue was called the praerogātīva, a word rooted in Latin rogāre, “to ask; to ask an assembly for a decision.” When English adopted prerogative from Latin, via Anglo-French, in the 15th century, it took only the idea of the privilege the ancient Roman voting group enjoyed; the English word referred then, as it also does now, to an exclusive or special right, power, or privilege. Often such a prerogative is tied to an office, official body, or nation, but as Bobby Brown reminded us in his 1988 song “My Prerogative,” the right to live as you like can also be referred to as a prerogative.

Me and my friends are having fun
“Me and my friends” is not grammatically correct when it is used at the beginning of a sentence, but you will probably hear some native #English speakers say it.
You can avoid making this mistake by remembering that “I” is the subject pronoun (the person who performs the action) and “me” is the object pronoun (the person that receives the action).
The correct way to express this idea is as follows: “My friends and I are having fun.”

La utilización de “bacán” en distintos países
Esta palabra se utiliza en distintos países, pero su significado varía. En Argentina, Uruguay y Colombia, se llama bacán al individuo que tiene mucho dinero: “Mi vecino es un bacán que tiene tres automóviles y siempre veranea en el Caribe”, por ejemplo. En cambio, países como Cuba, Colombia, República Dominicana y Chile, utilizan “bacán” como un adjetivo que califica a aquello que resulta positivo, agradable o genial.

Using double negatives
Double negatives are used in informal conversations, but they are generally incorrect. They are typically very stigmatized. If someone says “I don’t know nothing about that,” they are using the words “don’t” and “no” together. The sentence actually means “I don’t know anything about that.”

Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed annually on the last Monday in May. It is a day set aside to honor and remember the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
Traditionally, Memorial Day is marked by parades, speeches, and the laying of wreaths or flowers on the graves of the fallen. Many people also visit cemeteries and memorials to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
In addition to its somber remembrance of those who died, Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of summer in the United States. Many people celebrate with barbecues, picnics, and other outdoor activities.
However, it’s important to remember the true meaning behind Memorial Day and take time to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.

Successful Turkish Translation for Law Firm
In a recent project for a prominent law firm, we were able to provide high-quality translations that met our client’s needs and exceeded their expectations.
The project involved the translation of complex legal documents that included a presentation translated from #Spanish to #Turkish. The documents included legal agreements, contracts, and an important presentation. The client required #translations that were accurate, precise, and culturally appropriate for their target audience in a Turkish-speaking country.
To ensure the best possible outcome, we carefully selected a team of experienced legal #translators who were native Turkish speakers with a deep understanding of the Turkish legal system and culture.
We employed a rigorous quality control throughout project to ensure that the translations were accurate, error-free, and of the highest possible quality.
As a result of our efforts, the client was extremely pleased with the final translations. The client also noted that the translations helped them to build stronger relationships with their Turkish-speaking clients and contributed to the success of their business operations in Turkey. The client expressed his gratitude with the following comment: “Thank you AHPLA team. Our presentation was very successful.”
A successful translation project requires a carefully planned approach, an experienced team of translators, and effective communication with the client. We were able to deliver a successful translation project into Turkish for our law firm client, and we are confident that we can do the same for any other clients who require high-quality legal translations in any language.

less/fewer
Okay. Many of us confuse “less” and “fewer.” While less and fewer have similar meanings, there is a difference in terms of usage that relates to grammar. “Less” is used when we refer to uncountable nouns. “Fewer” is used for countable nouns.
Example of “fewer”:
“I had fewer friends in middle school than I did in college.”
Example of “less”:
“My sister made less money when she was in her early 20s than she did when she was in her 40s.”
So, use “less” for uncountable nouns and “fewer” for countable nouns.

Huge translation project for the UN in record time
In today’s global world, the ability to communicate across different #languages is more important than ever. Whether it’s for business, travel, the need for accurate and efficient #translation is paramount. While machine translation tools have made significant progress in recent years, they are not always reliable, especially when it comes to complex or specialized content used for training programs.
It’s impressive when a massive translation project is completed in record time, especially when dealing with intricate and technical language. Such a feat requires a combination of cutting-edge technology and human expertise.
One example of such a project was the translation of the Training Materials for the United Nations, which was completed in just two weeks. The training materials, which consisted of over 250,000 words of highly technical language, were translated into the language required by the United Nations for this special training program: Spanish. The translation team consisted of 10 translators, four revisers, and two proofreaders, who worked tirelessly to ensure the accuracy and consistency of the translations.
To achieve such a massive translation in such a short time, the team employed a combination of Computer Assisted Tools and human expertise. This hybrid approach allowed the team to achieve both speed and accuracy, without sacrificing quality.
But the success of this project was not just due to the use of technology. The team’s ability to work together effectively, communicate clearly, and stay focused on the task at hand were also critical factors. The project required a high level of coordination by our star PM Vanessa Fonseca and collaboration among the translators, revisers, and proofreaders, who worked to ensure that the translations were consistent across all documents.
In the end, the massive #translation project was completed in a timely manner and with a high degree of accuracy, allowing the information to be widely disseminated and understood by the participants of the training program. This achievement not only demonstrates the power of technology and human expertise of the AHPLA team when working together but also highlights the importance of accurate and efficient translations to measure up to the increasing needs of our customers in our globalized world.
To conclude, completing a huge translation project in record time requires a combination of technology, human expertise, and effective #collaboration. The United Nations translation project serves as an excellent example of how such a feat can be accomplished by our team of top-notch collaborators.

International Day of the Portuguese Language
The International Day of the Portuguese Language, also known as Dia Mundial da Língua Portuguesa, is celebrated annually on May 5th. This day was established by the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) in 2009 to promote and celebrate the Portuguese language and its diverse cultures around the world.
The Portuguese language is spoken by over 260 million people worldwide, making it the sixth most spoken #language in the world. It is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor. It is also spoken in other parts of the world such as Goa, Macau, and parts of Africa and Asia where Portuguese had a historical presence.
The International Day of the Portuguese Language aims to promote cultural diversity, multilingualism, and the use of Portuguese as a language of communication, diplomacy, and trade. It also aims to raise awareness of the importance of the Portuguese language in international relations and cultural exchanges.
On this day, various cultural events and activities are organized around the world to celebrate the Portuguese language and its cultures. These include music concerts, exhibitions, conferences, and poetry readings. In Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries, schools and universities organize special activities to celebrate the day, such as language contests, cultural performances, and workshops.
The International Day of the Portuguese Language is an opportunity to celebrate the richness and diversity of the #Portuguese language and its cultures, and to promote its use and learning worldwide.

“En base a”
¿Sabías que, cuando hacemos referencia a la frase “en base a”, es completamente incorrecta? Mas sin embargo su uso está totalmente extendido, y probablemente sea una de esas nuevas incorporaciones al diccionario español.
La forma correcta de dicha oración, deberíamos ser “con base en, según, basándose en, de acuerdo con”.

Celebrating the #English language at the UN
English Language Day at the UN is celebrated on 23 April, the date traditionally observed as both the birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare. The Day is the result of a 2010 initiative by the Department of Global Communications, establishing language days for each of the Organization’s six official #languages. The purpose of the UN’s language days is to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization.
Under the initiative, UN duty stations around the world celebrate six separate days, each dedicated to one of the Organization’s six official languages.
